There are many ideas about the origin of the term "minding your p's and q's". Lucille mentioned one of them. Here are other possibilities...all involving old British pubs:
The barkeeps had to keep track of their p's and q's (pints and quarts).
The waitresses were also expected to keep a tally of the p's and q's that were sold.
If people started arguing, the bartender reminded them to mind their own drinks...their p's and q's.
Today, minding your p's and q's means to be on your best behavior. Ironic, considering the bad behavior that must have resulted from all that drinking!!!
Sheryl: sometime in the ’70’s, when Dave & Nancy visited us in L.A., we’d planned to (& did) take them to see Wright’s Hollyhock House. A neat surprise, Nancy told us Dave was an FLW fan. That was one time when some of our entertainment for out-of-town guests actually worked out. Serendipity!
ReplyDeleteJenn, I read every bit of your blog and I say Orchids to You! The first thing I wanted to say is that you’re a role model for all wheelchair people, but the pun there — role model/roll model — is too obvious. … Hey, I want to post a cartoon of me as one of your followers, but is there one of a 73-yr-old gal who looks 99?
Diane, yes, I’d really like to join you-all in June. But it’s SO HARD TO GET AWAY FROM HERE. AND I need to lose 20 lb. AND I have nothing to wear. Oh well, Vidal Sassoon said “If there’s a problem, there must be a solution.” = )
Wendy & Kelley: do your younguns roller skate? That’s one of Peter’s favorite activities, and if we come, he’ll most likely bring his skates. It would be fun for him to zoom around with Lane, Alex, Tyler, & Hailey.
Lu-I hope Peter and you can come this summer. These get togethers are so few and far in between. We girls used to roller skate every Sat night at the Streeter Hall. I did try to roller blade awhile back, but the blades hurt my feet & they felt different than my faithful roller skates.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised by American Idol myself, but you are right Farm girl about the judges-too wishy washy. I still like James cuz I'm a rock n roller and he just tugs at my heart strings.
Have a good weekend everyone!
Hi Lucille! Adam said that the FLW house in Quasqueton is interesting. I'll be willing to go if anyone else wants to go.
ReplyDeleteHi Wendy! We'll expect to see you in skates this summer. too!!!! Re. James...Before Wednesday night's Idol, I'd never heard the Beatles song that he sang this week. Ironically, I heard it on the radio last night!
