There's a First Time for Everything
There's a first time for everything. I've had my Durango for 13 years...there's never been a pile of snow that it couldn't plow through. Until tonight. On my way to return a table that we had borrowed for Tyler's birthday party, I realized that I'd driven right by the house. Looking for a place to turn around, I spotted a snow-covered school driveway that, based on the number of visible tire tracks, had obviously been driven on many times. So I turned into the drive and immediately sunk up to my fenders in snow. There was no way that my D or I were going anywhere! I called my motor club; thirty-five minutes later a tow truck arrived. Unbelievable...it was the same tow truck company that was sent to my rescue the other two times this month that I've needed help. But, I digress. Afterward, I said to the guy who so effortlessly pulled me out, "Look at all those tracks. Why is it that everyone else could drive through here and I got stuck?" His response..."Those are snowmobile tracks". True story. : )

Jenn & Diane: Forget the L word. Call it fibbing or stretching the truth. I’d say this is one of those times when ya do what ya gotta do.
ReplyDeleteDisneyland, 2009: We (mostly I) pushed Robt’s wheelchair everywhere. Exhausting for a 71-year old.
2010: Each a.m. we trundled way over into D-land, a LONG haul from the hotel, & rented a motorized wh-ch (MWC). It couldn’t leave the D-land grounds —and the hotels are OFF the grounds— so we had to leave R’s own wheels there & pick ’em up before our late-p.m. return to the hotel. Next day, repeat.
2011: After a day of that cumbersome process, Guest Services told us some good news. We could order an MWC to be delivered to the hotel & keep it for the duration of our stay! Cheaper & way more convenient than the system described above. These wheels could & did go everywhere we wanted to go. We charged the chair o’night at an outlet in the hall outside our room. Yay!
If we’d shell out to a company called Bruno.com we could get a platform attached to the back of our car & take R’s own MWC w/ us from Fresno to wherever. We may do that.
Bev, pls explain midget wrestling. About the pizza served at Trax: surely Penny & Lucas don’t make it themselves? —Though, knowing what a bundle of energy Penny is, I wouldn’t be surprised.
D & D took us to the Amanas many years ago. The main thing I remember is that I drooled over some Christmas light covers for sale in one of the shops. Later I asked D & D to find them & buy some for me, but those decorations were no longer available. However, Darold picked out some others & sent them. Even better than the ones I’d seen! And still among my favorite ornaments.
According to The 12 Days of Christmas in Iowa, a charming book Diane sent me, the Amanas are a national historic landmark. That book also talks about the effigy mounds, which Farm Girl mentioned here last fall, & several other Hawkeye-State attractions that were new to me.
For those who haven’t seen that book: if I come to the reunion, I’ll bring it along.
Hey, isn’t it time to start a countdown? If I figure right, it’s 143 days till … the Grant reunion begins!
Sheryl, The Shack has been on the best-sellers list for many weeks. — I’m asking Leslie to get me Morning Glory from the library. Is it related to the movie of that name?
No Iowa travel guide yet. Mail takes a while to reach us out in the boonies.
Sunday I was helping Robt w/ his shower. Peter was eager to make banana bread. We had a mix, but he did the whole thing on his own: measured oil & water, cracked the eggs, stirred, & spooned it into 12 cupcake holders. Turned out perfect! He’s helped me a lot in the kitchen, but this was a first, his doing A - Z strictly unaided. We were impressed. This morning he asked Grandpa “Would you like an all-American breakfast?” He served a muffin topped w/ red pepper, a cherry tomato, & blueberries. Along w/ a glass of milk. Get it? Red, white, & blue. Good-sport Robert chuckled & dug in.
I could be a mean BIG sister and say that tale is a oerfect BLONDE story, but, if truth be told, I would get stuck in the same situation! Who can see the difference between snowmobile tracks/car tracks in the dark? Did you have a flashlight and a book with you, Farm Girl? I keep those 2 things + a puzzle book in the car at all times. I never am sure how long I will be waiting in the car! Hope to see the Farm Girl clan on Thursday, Jenn has a meeting and lunch in your city. Moon rings have been around Iowa for a loooooooooong time. What size does Maryann wear? Dave, we have not heard from you for awhile. Let us know how all of you are and what you are all keeping busy with! Time to go to the Burg for dinner and to see a Church Ladies production. Take care all!!!
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! Sorry to hear about your "getting stuck" story, Sheryl. Reminds me of the time Wendy and Penny were driving our 4 WD Dodge pickup and drove off of the driveway at the farm because it had snowed and they couldn't tell where the road was. I thought Clay could blow a gasket, but he just got in and drove it right out and that was the end of that!! You have a new washer, Farm Girl. Now how about a new car, or do you want to deal with the car salesman in the family and we could drive new wheels to you in June???? Lu, midget wrestling is just what the name says. Midget people who wrestle and get paid for letting people watch them. It hasn't been in Jamestown for a long time, but Streeter has that event about once a year. P and L think it will be a BIG night for them. No, Penny doesn't make the pizza. They buy frozen ones and have pizza ovens to bake them in. We had supper with Penny and Maddie tonight. She was so restless and naughty. Kept thinking of excuses to get under the table and crawl out to walk around. (We sat in a booth.) I will have M overnight on Thursday night. She is usually pretty good and sleeps all night through. Time for bed. Bye.
ReplyDeleteHi Lucille! Yes, there was a movie, filmed in 1993, based on the book, Morning Glory. It starred Christopher Reeve and Deborah Raffin...I saw it and liked it almost as well as the book.
ReplyDeleteDid I mention my favorite author? John Grisham. I've liked everything that he's written.
Tell Peter that I'm looking forward to eating his banana bread next summer when he makes it for us here in Iowa!
Hi Diane! No flashlight...no book...something much better. Food! I'd stopped at McDonalds on the way. Good thing because I know that I would have starved to death during the thirty-five minute wait!
ReplyDeleteHi Bev! No new (or used) car for me...I plan to drive the D until the wheels fall off. With my luck, that will happen...for sure...probably sooner than later. Have fun Thursday night during Maddie's overnight. : )
