Horse Sense
Derek "City Boy" Weller has never been very comfortable around horses. In fact, last summer, when Adam and I went on a trail ride at Fort Bragg, he wouldn't go with us. Now, however, he has a girlfriend who has a horse boarded in the stables at F.B. He has been practicing his horse skills by helping her with Billy's feeding, grooming, and exercising. He told me that he even took a horseback riding lesson this weekend. What happened to the good old days when a person just jumped on a horse and took off?!? I guess I probably need to take a lesson or two the next time I'm in NC...there are probably a few things I need to learn/relearn! : )

Congratulations, Adam! You’re so talented! (But I already knew that.) Your L, L, & L album cover is dramatic. The guy at the lunch counter just exudes emotion. We were impressed too by how articulate your description is. What kind of painting are you doing? Oil? From what I hear, that’s not easy. (Is it coincidence that your e mail addr includes 333?)
ReplyDeleteGood for Penny & Lucas. As I wrote to Penny, Trax sounds like just what Jamestown needs. —If I lived there I’d offer to keep Madison sometimes too. She sounds like such a sweetie-pie.
Yes, Bev, after a day or two of the discomfort of using the men’s “comfort” [as bathrooms are known in the Philippines] someone gave us a map showing the family BRs. Disneyland has 8 or so of those, and we did check out a couple of ’em. Nice.
Maryann’s favorite Disney ride is California Screamin’, a roller coaster. I teased her that I could hear her screams clear across the park, but she insisted she kept mum. [She has always described herself as calm.] Peter likes the ferris wheel that gives you a choice of swinging or non-sw. … There’s a new Disney feature called World of Color that’s breathlessly exciting, with sky-high fountains, music, fireworks, and even fire. Peter was thrilled and repeated “AWESOME!” like a broken record.
Traffic wasn’t bad, though Robert says the last 84 miles (likewise the first 84 miles coming home) are the most stressful.
Books, one of the great joys of life. Which one would you take to a desert island if you were limited to one? I used to say I’d pick Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations, but now I’d vote for the Letters of E. B. White. It’s 600-plus pages of delight. Leslie would take The Crimson Petal & the White, by Michel Faber. Hey, 2 Whites there.
Are mood rings coming back? Maryann loves the idea. One of her friends has one purchased in “some other town.” We spent a good share of Saturday letting our fingers do the walking, but it seems that fad hasn’t reached Fresno yet. Guess where she finally located & ordered one? Amazon.com. Did you know you can order Grape-Nuts Flakes on Amazon.com? They’re hard to find in stores, though I did glom on to some at WalMart. That was Robert’s Christmas present. Don’t laugh! Like most men, he’s hard to shop for.
Walking distance from our house is a magnet school, Grades 5 - 8, with a top reputation. We submitted Peter’s name, and Leslie just got notified that he’s accepted [to start this August]. We’re all so tickled. P. will most likely get a better education there than at our regular neighborhood elementary.
Long discussion on NPR yesterday a.m. about shingles. A woman they interviewed said it was worse than labor pains. Mine wasn’t THAT bad. —Tell Darold that I blamed food too (Mexican salad) but when both Robt & Pete got sick also, I admitted it must’ve been the flu. Love to all
Hi all from frigid ND. Windchill was -35 last time I checked. High today was -5 and 20th straight day we have had snow in some form or another. Made Midwest Ham Chowder (one of Penny's recipes). The first thing that has tasted good to me for a few days. All of the Ave Maria Village's hallways have been shut down because of flu. Mom hasn't gotten it yet and hope she doesn't.
ReplyDeleteIn answer to the question of whether Penny, Lucas and Madison might be coming to the IA reunion, when Diane asked L if he might be coming, he said, "Yes." Probably too early to tell, though. Madison has never taken a longer ride in the car than one to Bismarck, so don't know how she would do.
Sounds like Ty's b'day party was a huge success. Time flies, doesn't it?
Hi Lucille! It sounds like you had a wonderful time at "Disney"...it would be so much fun to go there...especially at this time of year. If I were going to be stranded on a desert island, I'd have a tough time choosing between these two books: Morning Glory by LaVyrle Spencer and The Shack by William P. Young. Both great reads! Congratulations to Peter for being accepted into the magnet school. Lucille and Robert, you must be very proud of all of your grandchildren! : )
ReplyDeleteHi Bev! It has "warmed up" a little here...has it warmed up in ND? It was SO UNBELIEVABLY COLD here last Friday morning that school was delayed for 2 hours. The Midwest Ham Chowder sounds great; I'll have to find Penny's cookbook. (I packed all of my cookbooks when I listed the house for sale and haven't unpacked them yet.) I hope that Leah did not get the flu.
ReplyDeleteTTYL : )
