Sheryl, do you remember this? The details are a bit fuzzy in my mind, but I think it went like so. You asked what Leslie (probably 6 or 7 then) would like for Christmas. She requested a Barbie wedding dress. At that point we weren’t sure there even was such a thing. But you found one & sent it. It was splendid, & Leslie was delighted!
Bev, I ADMIRE you for making all those Barbie clothes. I can sew, but not very well, & the older I get, the less patience I have for it. Sheryl, was home ec no longer a required course for A-O girls? In the 50s every AHS girl took cooking & sewing. I was so brainwashed, it took me years to realize I don’t like either one.
That brings us to the pantsuits Christmas, 1970. The folks & Sheryl were still on the Sterrett farm. Mom made pantsuits for at least 5 granddaughters, plus one for me! Probably all were polyester. Mine was a lovely peach color & fit perfectly, in spite of her never having me there to try it on. Just the right length & everything. I loved wearing it, & wore it A LOT.
Another outstanding Dec. 1970 memory. Everyone was present or accounted for except D & D. It seems that Darold had just finished part of his work at Corvallis, and he & his Mrs. were moving back to Waverly (—temporarily? Diane, pls explain this), with a Christmas stop scheduled at Anthon. The day they were due the weather was bad, close to blizzardy. We were nervous. Where were D & D? Were they okay? Darkness fell. Then! Here came the lights of a super-long U-Haul up the lane and into the yard. It was the happiest feeling, having our dear ones arrive safely in spite of adverse conditions. —Another holiday memory that I’ll always cherish.
Hi Lucille! You have such a great mind for remembering specific events and details of those events. (I, on the other hand, remember the feelings and moods of events...isn't that strange?). And so, no, I don't recall the Barbie wedding dress, but I do remember how delighted Leslie was...ha ha! Home ec was not a required class when I was in high school. I was a member of FHA (Future Homemakers of America) and felt out of place because ALL of the other members were in home ec. I do like to cook (although I rarely do) but Bah Humbug to the sewing thing! I do remember the pantsuits of the 70's (probably because of photos I've viewed recently). You were all so snazzy! I do not remember the time that we waited for D & D to arrive, but I do recall the MANY hours M & D spent pacing and worrying while their kids were traveling. What was the phone plan? When you arrived home, you were supposed to call M & D's number and let the phone ring...how many times? I'm sure that, because that worry was ingrained in me at a young, impressionable age, that's the reason I still worry every time my kids are out on the roads! Quiz time: How many times did I use the word "remember" in this comment? FYI...I misspelled it the first time I typed it...every time!!!
snow.... :(~
